LA MIRADA, Calif. –
Micah Pries became the 10th student-athlete in NCAA Division II to hit for the cycle this season in the first game on Friday, but unfortunately for PLNU it had to settle for a split in the twinbill with Biola. The Eagles won the opener, 10-8, before the Sea Lions came back to win the second game, 2-1.
Game 1: A grand slam by Colton Worthington in the eighth inning erased an 8-6 Sea Lion lead and brought the 10-8 victory to Biola.
It was the first lead Biola had since scoring four runs in the first inning. PLNU erased that deficit with a three-run innings in both the third and the fifth. Biola tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth on two bases loaded walks to tie up the game at 6-6.
Micah Pries put Point Loma back in front with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth and Point Loma held the 8-6 lead into the eighth.
The home run was one of four hits for Pries in the game as he hit for the cycle. The sophomore center fielder posted a single in the first, a triple in the fifth, a home run in the sixth and a double in the ninth to complete the Sea Lions' first cycle since moving to NCAA Division II. He finished the game 4-for-5 with the cycle, two RBI and three runs scored. The triple was his sixth on the season and it moved him into first place in the PLNU record books for triples in a season. He is tied for seventh in school history with seven career triples. Pries was the only Sea Lion to record a multi-hit game.
Joey Magro led Biola with four hits and three runs. In addition to Worthington's grand slam, River Fawlet also posted a first inning home run and three RBI. Joey Leavitt (2-0) earned the win in relief and Daniel Jang picked up a save in his second straight game and now has 11 on the season.
Cole Millerd (1-1) took the loss for Point Loma.
Game 2: Baseball is all about opportunities and making the most of them.
Justin Ledgerwood made the most of his opportunity today when it came knocking. After replacing
Colby Kaneshiro in the lineup in the fourth inning, he came up with no one on and two outs in the eighth inning and crushed a 0-1 pitch over the centerfield wall to give PLNU a 2-1.
Wyatt Shackleford (6-1) pitched a scoreless seventh to finish off the victory and earn him his sixth straight win. He pitched all seven innings allowing four hits and one run, while walking two and striking out seven. Biola's Josh Ludeman (2-3) took the loss after coming out of the pen.
Point Loma initially fell behind 1-0 on a Colton Worthington home run in the fourth inning. They tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when
John Balliet scored on a wild pitch.
