SAN DIEGO -
Finn Tiedemann was in the right place at the right time to deliver a 1-0 victory for the Point Loma men's soccer team against No. 18 Fort Hays State.
Â
The Sea Lions had struggled all match to break through the Tigers' defense, and were being outshot late 20-5. Then
Fabian Lueders took a chance and made a long ball over the top. Tiedemann played the pass perfectly and got behind his defender for a 1v1 with the keeper. Tiedemann lined up his shot towards the top of net. It hit the crossbar and angled back to bounce just inside the goal line. There was a moment of controversy about whether the ball broke the plain, but the assistant ref immediately signaled for the goal, as Tiedemann was swarmed by his happy teammates.
Â
The match was not over however, and PLNU had to hold off two more attacks by the Tigers, which included
Wiktor Lasota saving a shot on the doorstep in 90th minute. Lasota would finish the contest with six saves and his first shutout of the season. Cullen Fisch had one save for Fort Hays State.

Wolf's Words
On Tiedemann's goal: "Fabian saw Finn's run and took a chance clipping it over. (Fort Hays State) was all over us and we had nothing going. They were down our throats and we had to stretch it."
Â
On the moment for Tiedemann: "Finn works so hard and I am so excited for him that he got the reward. He took that shot really well. It wasn't an easy chance. He just keeps moving those legs. Finn is a warrior."
Â
On getting a win on a day PLNU didn't play well: "Part of the question for the 2018 team is; 'can we get results when we don't play well? On days we aren't passing the ball well, can we win?'"
Â
More on the win over Fort Hays State: "That was the best team we have seen this year and we got a result. It was a good sign that we could be second-best on the day and still find a way to get a win. Hopefully that is something we can build on."
Â
On positives from the match: "This is the first time we have had all our guys available to us. In a way this was the start of the season since we now finally have everyone available. I was very hard on the guys the last week so I am going to need to make sure I encourage them after this win."
