DIAZ NETS GAME-WINNER OVER NDNU

BELMONT, Calif. – The Sea Lions went on the road to the Bay Area for their first conference action on the road this weekend. The team was at Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday afternoon, coming off a huge win in their PacWest opener over Fresno Pacific. In familiar fashion, Point Loma would ensure an early goal held up as they beat the Argonauts 1-0.

The defense anchored the Sea Lions once again as they made it difficult for NDNU to get good looks at the net. The Argonauts applied a fair amount of defensive pressure as well, but Point Loma found a way to net an early goal. Julia Glaser delivered a great ball thru the defense, finding Bella Diaz on a run to the back of the net where she dribbled around the keeper for the score.

The Argonauts found some offensive rhythm late in the match, getting two shots on goal in the late in the game. Emma Hinson would make the two late saves to hold the score at 1-0 giving her the shutout and securing the 2-0 conference start.

Turning Point
The Argonauts were on the attack late in the game, getting two shots on goal in the last 14 minutes of the match. In the 82nd minute, Vanessa Sanchez broke away for a one-on-one with Emma Hinson who made a beautiful one-handed save to keep the Sea Lions lead and seal the win for PLNU.

Words from Coach Kiely
On getting a tough conference win on the road: "It was a really important game, and I give a lot of credit to Notre Dame de Namur, I felt they were one of the top opponents we have played. They have a lot of good individual, as well as team, talent, so this one felt good to get a win over a solid team. I didn't feel that it was really secure on our end, it was a battle to the very end, but we were able to battle through it and I commend our group for being able to do so."

On the consistent efforts of the defense: "Having to make some changes and still keeping a clean sheet is a big positive. Emma came up with a huge save again today. London stepped in well, as well as Courtney, but Jacqui and Lauren are also very strong. I feel like we have a really good rotation there in the back and kudos to those who are stepping in who haven't gotten a lot of reps and minutes lately and they still get the job done. We talk a lot about it being a team effort, especially because of the way we play, it's going to be everyone's effort to do so."

On Bella's goal: "It was so great. I put her in a tough position in training this week and I thought she rose today. I appreciate her willingness to take that and apply it today. She showed very good composure. It was a nice ball that was slipped through by Julia and a very composed and quality finish by her."

On early missed opportunitites: "I think we had a number of great opportunities, Delaney had a great cross, Teagle had a great cross, and other early opportunities that we couldn't finish. So we're back to the 1-0 game, and it didn't need to be, so we will look to move forward from there and look to make some progress in that area, just like we did last game."
