PLNU BATTLES IN OT LOSS

HONOLULU – Point Loma began their Hawaii trip with a tough test as they faced the Hawaii Pacific Sharks who had only one conference loss coming into this game. The Sea Lions came out hot but were unable to hold on after a late score from HPU sent the game to overtime. The Sharks controlled the overtime period to come away with the 78-72 win.

The Sea Lions came ready for the challenge and started the game on a 9-0 run while also blocking the first three shot attempts from the Sharks. Point Loma held Hawaii Pacific scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of game action, but the Sharks were only getting started. While HPU got their offense going, Point Loma was still able to find their own ways to score and maintain the lead through the first two quarters.

The second half was full of back-and-forth action as neither team held more than a five-point lead at any time. Each time Point Loma attempted to pull away the Sharks had an answer that shifted momentum back in their favor. The Sea Lions had a couple of attempts down the stretch to put the game out of reach, but ultimately HPU made the plays needed to send the game to overtime giving them the chance to secure the win.

Sydney Peterson led the Sea Lions in scoring with 19 points, including shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc. Carol Schroeder continued her solid play with 17 points, five rebounds, and a block. Cara Liggins also scored in double figures for Point Loma totaling 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Alysha Marcucci led the Sharks in scoring with 22 points.

Thoughts from Coach Faulkner
On getting out to a solid start: "I thought we had a great week of practice, we were well prepared for this game. We had great defensive energy to start, we started with a 9-0 lead which is huge against a good team on their home court. I thought we sustained that energy for the most part, it is hard to keep a good team like that from scoring. They are a good team, they were gonna come back, ultimately we had our chances down the stretch and we couldn't finish it."

On what the team can learn from this game: "I told them that now we have proven that we are with the top half of the league. We are right there with APU, HPU, or Dominican. Every game we have been in and we have had opportunities to win, and this one we could have iced the game. I feel that the takeaway is that the plays throughout the course of the game are what can change the outcome and we need to be better throughout the game. It's the offensive rebound putbacks, the layup at the end of the half, if those plays are prevented we win by eight or 10. We are still learning and we have gained great experiential knowledge from these situations. I like our team and how we have evolved over the course of the season, we will be very tough to play down the stretch."

On preparing for the next two games: "We need to go get two wins. We have two winnable games now, this is a great trip for us. If we can walk away 2-1 that's a successful trip for us and then we can get back at it at home. We are right there, we will continue to work and hopefully we can get Chaminade on Thursday."
