SAN DIEGO, CA -
Tim Siegfried netted the game winner in double overtime for the Sea Lions who defeated Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday, Oct. 17 by a score of 3-2.
The Sea Lions were on the attack right from the opening kick off. PLNU created pressure on both sides of the ball making the Argonauts uncomfortable, ultimately resulting in a scoring chance for the Sea Lions. In the eighth minute of play.
Corey Lundeen settled a ball that bounced off a NDNU defender, and passed it off to David Acherandio. Acherandio struck the ball with his left boot from the top of the box to the low left side of the goal to put the Sea Lions in front 1-0 over the Argonauts. The PLNU offense would keep the pressure going, recording two more shots in the 15th minute of play. After a blocked shot by the Argonauts, NDNU raced down the field and drew a foul in the penalty box. The Argonaut player sent the ball wide right, and the Sea Lions would escape the NDNU scoring chance with the lead. For the next ten minutes NDNU and PLNU would trade possessions. In the 28th minute
Teague Anderson shot the ball at the net, but was saved by the keeper. The save went out of bounds and resulted in a Sea Lion corner kick. On the ensuing corner, David Acherandio booted the ball to the center of the box where the ball found Jacob Eisenberg's head and snuck past the keeper in the top middle of the goal. The next 17 minutes were filled with fouls and substitutions. With 30 seconds left in the first half the Argonauts played a ball toward the Sea Lion goal and Josh Santillian would beat
Connor McEwen to the spot, dribble around him, and score to cut the Sea Lion lead in half. The Sea Lions went to halftime leading 2-1.
In the second half the NDNU offense looked to use the late goal as momentum and did so. Five minutes into the second half Santillian would strike again for the Argonauts. The game was tied with 40 minutes to play. The NDNU offensive pressure kept coming as they took two more shots after they gained possession of the ball again.
Corey Lundeen found himself with two great scoring chances in the right side of the penalty box. In the 45th minute Lundeen shot to the top right of the goal but missed off the side of the net. He would again find a scoring chance in the same position this time heading it off the side of the goal in the 65th minute. As the match went along the intensity grew on both sides and a numerous amount of fouls would ensue. Both offenses could not net one before the clock struck 90:00, and so they went to overtime tied 2-2.
In the first overtime period neither team could get a shot off, the defenses played tight and would not allow any scoring chances. Both teams received a corner but could not capitalize on the opportunity. At the end of the first overtime period the teams remained tied 2-2. Entering the second overtime PLNU felt that they had regained the momentum and looked to capitalize. The PLNU defense stood strong not allowing a shot in the second overtime. In the 106th minute
Corey Lundeen sent a through ball that found
Tim Siegfried, who had the keeper to beat. He put the ball low at the middle of the net, and the keeper could not make the stop. The golden goal gave the Sea Lions a 3-2 victory in double overtime.
