GERARDEN'S GOLDEN GOAL KEEPS PLNU PERFECT IN THE PACWEST

SAN DIEGO - Jacqui Gerarden saved her first career goal for the perfect moment. After PLNU went up two goals early, NDNU tied the match and forced overtime, Gerarden made sure her teammates and the fans would not have to wait too long for a result as she scored the golden goal in the second minute of overtime to lift the Point Loma women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Notre Dame de Namur. (Oct. 17)

Julia Glaser gave Point Loma the early lead with two goals in the first seven minutes. She scored her first following a cross as she controlled the ball and knocked it past the goalie. Her next goal was on a great through-ball in which Glaser was able to beat the defense and the goalie to the ball and knock it into the back of the net for the score.

However, it did not take NDNU long to answer. The Argonauts cut the Sea Lions' lead to 2-1 on a penalty kick in the 11th minute after PLNU was charged with a handball in the box. The equalizer came six minutes later when Susan Whitney corralled a cross and deposited it into the top right corner of the net for the goal.

The score remained 2-2 through halftime and into overtime before Gerarden delivered the game-winner. She received a pass from Glaser on the left wing and took it from midfield into the 18-yard box before encountering resistance. Gerarden juked the first defender and then drove by the second. She took a shot on goal which the goalkeeper could not secure. The ball bounced right back to Gerarden, who guided it into the net for the game-winner.

Emma Hinson had four saves in the win, and Alexis Aguilar made two saves for the Argonauts.

Words from Coach Kiely
On the match: "It was surely an exciting match for fans - lots of goals today. Norte Dame de Namur started well, and somehow we scored first- a very nice goal if I might add, and it is great to have Julia (Glaser) back. I thought we attacked very well in the first half with both goals involving a lot of players, good sequences, and beautiful finishing. I also thought we were poor in transition, and we got caught in those moments, and NDNU capitalized. Credit to NDNU and their mentality today."

On the overtime win: "It was great to get an overtime win and for the group to grind out a very difficult match. I'm pleased with Jacqui's determination on the goal - she willed us to victory."

On her team: "Proud of everyone today and thankful for the resiliency of this group."
