Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

FOUR GOALS LEAD PLNU TO WIN IN PACWEST OPENER

HAYWARD, Calif. - Four different Sea Lions scored as the Point Loma women's soccer team went on the road to pick up a 4-1 win in the PacWest Conference opener for both teams. (Oct. 3)

The Sea Lions' offense struck first in the 19th minute on an Abbi Swanson goal off an assist from Makenna Herrero. One minute later, Fernanda Osorio posted her first goal of the season to lift PLNU to the 2-0 lead, and the score remained there through halftime.

Holy Names would get one goal back on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. The Sea Lions answered with two goals one minute apart to extend their lead to 4-1. The first of the goals was an inverse of the match's opening goal as Swanson assisted Herrero for the score in the 75th minute. Abbey Teagle added an insurance goal one minute later on an assist by Osorio to finish off the match.

Point Loma outshot HNU 15-2 in the match, including 9-2 in shots on goal. PLNU also created other scoring chances with five corner kicks, compared to zero for the Hawks.

Words from Coach Kiely
On opening PacWest play with a win: "Conference play is always critical. I was proud of these women for getting a win on the road, and start conference off well. We have been a little back and forth this year, so it felt good to be back in form."

On the four goals and active team play: "We are down a few folks, and right now it is 'the next person ready,' and we had a number of people ready today. All of the goals were very good. It was great to have a variety of players scoring and contributing in so many ways. This game felt very collective, and it is really fun when the stat line can reflect that."

On HNU's penalty kick: "It was a fair call, and they put it away. We need to do better and deny those opportunities."

On upcoming match against Dominican: "It is going to be a very tough game. Hopefully we can get a few players back that we have been missing, and that will really help our depth. It is also about taking some of the momentum from today with the collective group contributing, and moving that on into Saturday."
