SAN DIEGO – After hosting Arizona Christian last season in their first ever meeting, the Sea Lions hosted the Firebirds back on the Point on Tuesday afternoon. The Firebirds came back with revenge on their minds after Point Loma took last season's match 5-2. ACU came into match undefeated and put their streak on the line against the Sea Lions.
The Firebirds would get their revenge, winning the match 4-3, and moved to 8-0 on the season. Point Loma struggled early in doubles play, dropping Nos. 2 and 3 doubles 6-3 and 6-2 respectively. With the doubles point wrapped up, a battle continued at No. 1 doubles, with
Thomas Dafcik and
Yuki Okamoto pushing their match to a tiebreak. Despite their efforts, they dropped the tiebreak 4-7 to give the Firebirds the doubles sweep.
Heading into singles play,
Mark Vasat made quick work of his competition going 6-2, 6-2 to give Point Loma their first win of the day. Okamoto dropped his match at No. 2 singles and the teams would trade points as each singles match finished. Dafcik would finish next, evening the score at 2-2, with his win at No. 1 singles.
Tim Soderman then dropped his match on court three to give ACU the edge, but
Scott Wheeler came back with a win against his former teammate, and former Sea Lion,
Jesse Miritello, to even the match at 3-3.
Jasdeep Paintal battled at the No. 6 position but he was unable to secure the victory as he fell in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 4-6, giving the Firebirds the win.

Wheeler's Words
On what he saw from his team coming off of a long break: "We played a real tough team in Arizona Christian. It was our first match back from a bit of a break, and we came out a little flat in doubles. Credit to the other team, they did a great job of jumping on that. In singles we came back and battled but that doubles point was the difference at the end of the day. It was a tough loss but I am really happy with how we competed."
On his team's progress in singles play: "There has definitely been progress in singles play. One of our biggest goals as a team is playing with confidence, and playing within your game style. Thomas, Scott, and Mark all did that very well today, getting the job done in solid straight set wins."
On Thomas' strong singles play this season and his role as a leader: "He has been a huge addition to this program. He had a great season last year and this year he is a better player. He is a more accomplished all-around player, he has added more aggressive shots and playing style to his arsenal. He is so mentally tough, that's one of his biggest strengths, he is talented physically but mentally he doesn't have those dips in performance that a lot of other players have. He leads by action with how he plays and he is a good example for those below him in level and in age."
