SAN DIEGO – The No. 12 ranked Point Loma men's basketball team defeated Concordia 93-83 on Saturday, Mar. 2, to lock up sole possession of the 2018-19 PacWest Men's Basketball Championship and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PacWest Tournament.
The Sea Lions never trailed in the game, but it took all 40 minutes to secure the victory.
Preston Beverly scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the second half to help PLNU extend a 15-point, halftime-lead to 29 points with 11:44 remaining.
The Eagles then hit their run, outscoring PLNU 21-4 over a six-minute stretch, to cut the lead to eight (76-68) with just over four minutes left. Point Loma responded with an impressive reverse layup by Beverly and four straight free throws to push the lead back to double figures with two minutes remaining.
Concordia would keep the pressure up down the stretch with the hope of a comeback in mind as they looked for steals and poor passes by the Sea Lions. However, Point Loma stayed poised in the final two minutes and did not commit a turnover, while sinking 9-of-12 shots from the charity stripe and getting a dunk from
Sterling Somers.
Daulton Hommes finished with 22 points. He went 6-of-11 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free throw line, while adding a game-high eight rebounds. Somers came off the bench to hit 5-of-8 shots en route to posting 15 points and five rebounds.
Brian Chambers led three Eagles in double figures with 21 points.
Tanner Nelson hounded him defensively all game, and Chambers had just five points at the half as Point Loma led by 15.
