PLNU DROPS TOUGH MATCH TO EAGLES

SAN DIEGO – After being rained out for their match on Thursday, the Sea Lions were back to work hosting conference foe Concordia Irvine. Point Loma's last loss to the Eagles came in the PacWest tournament in 2016, but it was the Eagles' day as they came away with a 4-3 over the Sea Lions.

Point Loma started the match off securing the important doubles point. Taylor McGowan and Nicole Camaratta led the Sea Lions with a dominant start at No. 3 doubles, winning 6-0. Gabi Armas and Ellie Gamble were able to secure the doubles point with a 6-4 win of their own.

Leading 1-0 going into singles play, Ellie Gamble earned the first singles point. Gamble won her first set 6-3 before winning by retirement of her opponent at No. 3 singles. The Eagles would earn the next point as Camaratta fell 1-6, 3-6, her first singles loss in the team's last four matches. Michelle Torres would earn the next point, giving the Sea Lions the 3-1 lead, needing just one point to secure the win.

It was all Eagles from there though taking wins on courts two and four to even the match at 3-3. Groeneveld faced Ghazal Pakbaten, who is ranked No. 17 in the country in the ITA rankings, at No. 1 singles to decide the match. After losing the first set 3-6, Groeneveld stormed back to take set two 6-3, but it would be Pakbaten who earned the final point taking the final set 6-3 to win the match for Concordia.

Wheeler's Words
On the intensity the women brought to the match: "In past seasons, every time we have played Concordia we have has a lot of really tight matches. We expected the same today, which is why getting the doubles important was important for us. That gave us a lot of momentum going into singles. Concordia came out ready to go in singles, played really well, they played tactically and did a few things that gave our team some trouble. The women had a little trouble adjusting, but at the end of the day they just made a few more shots than we did."

On Groeneveld's match against a tough, top-ranked opponent: "Pakbaten was nationally ranked last year as well, she's a very tough player. Shelby had a tough first set but she was able to come back in the second and focus on what she needed to do to play her best tennis. Against a player like that, hopefully that showed her that when she plays her best tennis she can hang with anybody. The third set had a lot of deuce games, close games, that just didn't go her way, but she was right there and almost got the team a big win today."

On preparing for the match next Friday: "It's going to be nice to have a few days off from matches. The last couple of weeks have been crazy, so it will be nice to have almost a full week to prepare for Hilo on Friday and then Cal State LA on Saturday. We will definitely take the time to get our bodies healthy and also work on a few things in practice, I think we will be ready to go to play some strong tennis on Friday."

News and Notes
> Torres has won her last three singles matches.
> Gamble has won her last four singles matches as well as her last four doubles matches with Armas.
