SAN DIEGO – Point Loma closed out their home schedule Friday afternoon when they hosted No. 21 Hawaii Hilo. The Sea Lions celebrated seniors
Thomas Dafcik and
Scott Wheeler who are in their final year of collegiate competition. PLNU last faced the Vulcans in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season, falling 5-3 to a tough team. It would be the Vulcans day once again as they came in and delivered a sweep of the Sea Lions, 7-0.
The Sea Lions have found success in doubles play all season long and they came out prepared to play against a tough Vulcan lineup.
Mark Penner and
Mark Vasat dropped their match 4-6 at No. 3 doubles, giving the Vulcans the early lead, but PLNU did not roll over.
Scott Wheeler and
Tim Soderman pushed their match to a tiebreak but fell 6-7(3-7).
Yuki Okamoto and
Thomas Dafcik kept their match close as well, but eventually fell 5-7 to the No. 13 doubles pair in the country.
After sweeping doubles play, Hawaii Hilo had the momentum and it showed in singles play. The Vulcans came away with two quick wins at Nos. 2 and 6 singles. No. 32 Alessandro Giuliato earned the 6-1, 6-1 win over Soderman for UHH before Penner dropped his match 0-6, 4-6, giving the Vulcans a 3-0 lead. UHH clinched the match with a win on court five, but they continued their dominant performance on the three remaining courts. Wheeler battled at No. 3 singles against the No. 50 ranked singles player but fell, 4-6, 4-6. Both Vasat and Dafcik pushed their matches to a third set but with the match already in hand for Hawaii Hilo they just played a tiebreak set to determine the winner. Both Dafcik and Vasat fell 10-7 in their tiebreak sets giving Hilo the complete sweep on the day.
