IRVINE, Calif. – The Sea Lions headed to Irvine on Wednesday afternoon to take on Concordia, looking to even the season series after the Eagles took the match, 4-3, in San Diego. The previous match came down to No. 1 singles where
Shelby Groeneveld and Ghazal Pakbaten battled in a three-set thriller that ended with Pakbaten taking her match and the overall victory for Concordia.
The teams played to clinch and began with singles play. The Sea Lions went up 3-0 early with three quick wins from
Gabi Armas,
Taylor McGowan, and
Nicole Camaratta. Armas was the first to earn a point as she took her match 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Camaratta was the next to put a point on the board with her team-leading 11
th singles win, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6 singles. McGowan had, arguably, one of her best performances of the season with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles to give Point Loma the dominant 3-0 lead.
The Eagles would earn the next point with a win at No. 3 singles to bring the score to 3-1 in favor of Point Loma, but
Shelby Groeneveld earned the grudge match victory over Pakbaten to seal the win. After a tough loss to Pakbaten in their first meeting this season, Groeneveld would be on the positive side of a three-set battle, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. After playing a tough schedule at No. 1 singles this season, Groeneveld earned her first win over a nationally-ranked opponent, and clinched the match for the Sea Lions.

Wheeler's Words
On the team's response on the road after losing to CUI at home: "The team was excited and focused on avenging their home loss to Concordia a few weeks ago. All four players who lost in singles in our home match vs Concordia (Shelby, Gabi, Taylor, Nicole) all won their singles match with three of the four winning very convincingly."
On Shelby getting a win against a top-ranked opponent: "Shelby's singles win today was a strong performance against a highly ranked player. The match had plenty of momentum shifts but Shelby was the more consistent player which was the difference."
On preparing for Senior Day against UCSD: "Much like today against Concordia, I know the girls are looking forward to taking on UCSD on Monday. If they bring the same intensity and focus I like our chances."
