SEATTLE - The Sea Lions were unable to overcome two early goals by Western Washington as they lost their final non-conference game 2-1 on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Point Loma was rewarded the opening kick off but would not get any offense generated on the first possession. The Western Washington defense created pressure early and forced the Sea Lions to turn the ball over. The Vikings found themselves with an early scoring chance after taking the ball away. Ryan Schaefer dribbled around two defenders and shot the ball before
Connor McEwen could meet him to get the ball. Fortunately for the Sea Lions the shot would miss wide left. That woke the Sea Lions up, the Vikings were still creating pressure but PLNU handled it well. In the sixth minute of play
Teague Anderson found himself on the left side of the box with an opportunity to score. He booted the ball to the low right side of the goal, but the WWU keeper would make a great save. Western Washington would take control of the rebound of the save and pass the ball down the pitch. One Viking attacker would take a shot that would be saved by McEwen. The team would fight for the loose ball until Western Washington came up with it. In the 11th minute of play Western Washington would draw a foul and receive a free kick from just outside the top right of the penalty box. Drew Farnsworth sent the ball across the box, and the ball would find the head of Cammron Miller who knocked it in to put the Vikings up 1-0 early in the first half.
After the goal the Sea Lions would and Vikings would trade possessions, fouls, and shots. During the 19th minute of play PLNU was rewarded a corner kick. Off the ensuing corner
Lucas Purgato had a great look at the goal from straight on just out side the box. He would boot it, but unfortunately was blocked before it had a chance of getting on goal. After the close call, WWU would clear the ball and maintain possession into the attacking end of the field. After playing the ball into the left side of the field the Vikings would try and cross the ball, it would hit a Sea Lion defender and go out of bounds. The Vikings would be rewarded a corner kick. WWU sent the corner into the box, but nothing would come of it. The Sea Lions cleared the ball out to midfield where, they thought it would relieve some pressure. Gus Diehl of Western Washington would send a pass from midfield to a streaking WWU attacker. The attacker would flick the ball over McEwen and score to put the Vikings up 2-0. Over the next ten minutes both teams would make substitutions and trade possessions. One substitution for the Sea Lions paid dividends in the 35th minute.
Hunter Loomis intercepted a pass from the Western Washington goal keeper, he would dribble towards the goal and then fire a low and hard shot that snuck inside the lower left side of the goal to cut the Viking lead in half. The Sea Lions would go to half trailing 2-1
PLNU opened up the second half with an aggressive mind set. they would control the ball for most the first five minutes. They were rewarded a corner. Nothing would come of the corner but after they regained possession of the ball
Jorge Navarro took a shot from the middle of the box, but would sail it high and to the left. Both teams would create scoring chances throughout the second half but could not convert on any of them.
