Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

BIOLA BESTS SEA LIONS IN NON-CONFERENCE MATCH

SAN DIEGO - Biola's Sarah Yang scored the only goal of the match right before halftime, and unfortunately, the Point Loma women's soccer team could not find the equalizer in a 1-0 non-conference loss to the Eagles on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The match was even throughout much of the first half, with PLNU even possessing the ball more on Biola's side of the field. However, Biola was able to make a few runs at PLNU late in the half. The first came on an unadvised pass from the Sea Lions, and the second was on a great pass to Colie Martin on the right side. She crossed back into the middle and beat the PLNU defender to set up a 2v1 with the goalie before laying off a perfect pass to Yang for the goal.

The Sea Lions would get a few chances in the second half. The first good look came on a 20-yard shot by Jacqui Gerarden which hit the crossbar. The ball then ricocheted and gave a second opportunity to Ashlee Watkins. She Headed the ball back towards the goal, but the Eagles' goalkeeper was able to recover and stop the shot.

The next best scoring opportunity came in the 83rd minute. Lauren O'Malley took the ball from her central defender position and weaved her way into Eagles' territory. She took a shot, but the goalie got her hands on it and pushed it back out for another header attempt by Watkins. A defender stopped the header on the goal line, and the ball popped back out to Hailey Clifford at the top of the box. She lined up the shot, and again it hit the crossbar. Those would be the last looks on goal for PLNU in the contest.

Words from Coach Kiely
On Biola: "Any match against a conference opponent is always going to be a challenge."

On her team: "This (result) was more internal. We have to take a long, hard look at what we really want for this season and if we are all collectively willing to go to battle for that."

On PLNU's lack of depth: "Obviously we have been plagued by injury, but that is very common at this point in the season for many teams. But that certainly doesn't matter; we need to get the job done. The last couple matches we have had some unfortunate calls, but we still need to get the job done. We are experiencing some adversity, and it will be interesting how we respond."

On starting conference play next week: "You do get almost to hit the reset button (when we begin conference play). We have to figure out if we have the ability to do that. I still believe we have the ability on the field, but we have not been able to live up to the play we had a few weeks ago. We can hit the reset button, and we have the personnel on the field, but we have to get there mentally."
