SAN DIEGO -
Connor McEwen recorded two saves, and
David Achaerandio netted his first goal as a Sea Lion to help lead the Point Loma men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Biola to open up their 2019 season on Thursday, Sept 5.
Â
Point Loma was tested early as Biola recorded five shots in the first 15 minutes, one being on goal. McEwen came up with a big save as a Biola player shot from the top of the box that would have put the Eagles up by one. Biola controlled the ball and momentum for most of the first half.Â
After a stoppage for a hydration break the Sea Lions came onto the pitch with an aggressive attack. In the 37th minute of the match
David Achaerandio netted the lone goal of the game on assists from
Teague Anderson and
Tim Siegfried to put PLNU up 1-0. Achaerandio streaked up to his mark along the near post side and received a pass from Anderson, he then made a move around a Biola defender, shot and scored. The Sea Lions would hold onto the lead going into halftime.Â
Â
As the second half began, Biola came out attacking very quickly putting up another three shots in the first 13 minutes. McEwen made a spectacular save on one shot to preserve not only the shut out, but the Sea Lion lead. Biola would not get another shot off in the second half. The intensity grew as the game continued with 10 total fouls in the second half and multiple yellow cards being assessed. Point Loma went on to win the game 1-0
Team records
Point Loma (1-0-0, 0-0-0 PacWest), Biola (0-1-0, 0-0-0 PacWest)
Wolf's Words
On the Sea Lion Goal "I thought it was a good team goal. David made a beeline as soon as Teague got on the ball and Teague smashed it across the face of the goal for a good team goal."
On the change in momentum "Biola's physical energy got on us a little bit, but once we got to the water break the guys had a couple words and settled themselves down. From that water break on I felt like we were the better group."
On the first win of the season "I told the guys that you only get 18 chances in a calendar year. So celebrate when you win because wins are huge. It was a huge first win"
