SAN DIEGO – Dominican tested the No. 23 ranked Point Loma men's basketball team on both ends of the court all night, but when the Sea Lions needed to make plays down the stretch they came through to earn an 84-74 win over the Penguins on Thursday night. (Jan. 23)
After Dominican tied up the game at 74-74 on a 3-pointer with 2:53 on the clock, PLNU answered with a jumper by
Sterling Somers to go back up by two. The Penguins would come down and find their big-man Lazar Djurovic on the block for what looked like a give-me layup. However, his shot rolled around and off the rim, and the Sea Lions seized the momentum.
On the following possession, with the shot clock winding down, Somers found
Jordan May in the corner for 3-pointer which put PLNU up five (79-74) with 1:19 remaining. The Sea Lions would get another defensive stop before finding
Ben Okhotin for another 3-pointer with 00:33 left.
Kaden Anderson would hit two free throws with 15 seconds later to seal the game. After DUC tied the game late, PLNU closed out the contest by outscoring the Penguins 10-0 and holding them to 0-of-6 shooting.
May and Anderson led the Sea Lions with 18 points apiece. Each hit two 3-pointers and both went a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Anderson added 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. May also had six rebounds and three steals.
Sterling Somers chipped in with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting and also added a team-leading four assists. Jordan Williams led the Penguins with 18 points.
