SAN DIEGO – The Point Loma baseball team split their doubleheader with Concordia on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Sea Lions won game one 9-3 thanks to a strong pitching performance by
Stirling Strong. PLNU fell in game two 6-1.
GAME ONE: The Sea Lions jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Travis Takata led off the game with a bunt single, Halligan then got hit by a pitch,
Otto Kemp would reach on a walk. With the bases loaded,
Easton Waterman stepped into the batter's box.
Easton Waterman brought in the first Sea Lion run after grounding into a fielder's choice to the shortstop.
Scott Anderson would hit a ground ball to the shortstop who then threw the ball away allowing two more runs to come around and score. After the first inning the Sea Lions' lead 3-0.
Concordia would respond with a solo home run in the top of the second cutting into the Sea Lion lead. Point Loma got the run back in their half of the second inning.
Izayah Alvarez stole third and came in to score after the CUI catcher threw the ball down the left-field line. Again, Concordia would respond with a run in the top of the third with a two-out double. The Eagle hitter tried to stretch the double into a triple but was thrown out to end the inning.
The Sea Lions tagged on another run in the fourth on a two-out single by
Otto Kemp extending their lead to 5-2. PLNU scratched across two more runs in the fifth. The first three Sea Lions reached base before
James Halpin lined into a double play.
Izayah Alvarez came up big with a two-out single that drove in two and gave the Sea Lions a 7-2 lead.
The Eagles could not get to
Stirling Strong in the middle innings. He would exit after going seven innings allowing just two runs and striking out eight. After sitting CUI down in order the Sea Lion offense took that momentum with them to the plate.
James Halpin busted the game open with a two-run home run giving the Sea Lions even more cushion as they pulled out in front 9-2.
Zachary Veen came on in relief in the eighth inning. After walking the first batter of the inning he would retire the next three to shut out the Eagles for the fifth consecutive inning.
The rally would fall short in the ninth for the Eagles as PLNU went on to win 9-3. Strong would get credited with his first win of the season while CUI's Mike Killeen received his first loss of the season.
GAME TWO: The Eagles got the scoring started in the top of the first inning when they pushed one run across on two hits and also got help with a Sea Lion error in the inning.
Concordia would tag on two more runs in the third and extend their lead to 3-0. The Sea Lions responded quickly in the bottom of the third. With one out,
James Halpin launched a fly ball to right-center that would hit off the scoreboard and put PLNU on the board.
Izayah Alvarez then dropped down a bunt to reach base and fluster the CUI defense. The next two Sea Lions fouled out and the inning would end. The PLNU kept the momentum as they sent down the Eagles in order in the top half of the fourth.
After the Halpin home run PLNU could not get the bats going in the following innings and were sent down in order in the fourth fifth, and sixth. Concordia took advantage of the PLNU cold streak and would tag on two in the seventh extending the lead 6-1.
