LA JOLLA, Calif. – Game two of this three game series went to the Tritons. Point Loma would fall to No. 2 UC San Diego 3-1 on Thursday, Feb. 6.
After Point Loma went one-two-three in the first the Tritons looked to take an early lead after loading the bases on a hit and two walks.
Jerry Quemada would bear down and get a shallow pop up to right field and then a ground out to shortstop to end the UCSD threat.
In the bottom half of the second inning, the Tritons would take the lead scoring one run on one hit and one error. Quemada would leave two runners stranded limiting the possibility of more than one runs being scored in the inning. Quemada would settle in making quick work of UC San Diego in the third.
After gaining some momentum back the Sea Lions would take it to the plate. With one out
Otto Kemp out get the inning started reaching on an error by the UCSD shortstop.
Michael Whiteside would dig in and ground into a fielder choice. Just when you thought momentum started to get back on the UCSD side,
Baxter Halligan split the left-centerfield gap. Whiteside would race around the bases and slide in safely for the first Sea Lion run, and tying the game 1-1. The Tritons would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth pulling out in front 2-1.
The Sea Lions saw an opportunity to at least tie if not try to take the lead in the top half of the seventh when they had runners on first and second with one out. The Triton defense would hold strong not allowing the runners to advance and getting out of the inning. The Sea Lions would hold the Tritons at bay in the middle innings not allowing any runs.
The Tritons would add a run in the eighth. UCSD would start the inning with a leadoff walk. The baserunner would steal second. Point Loma got the next two batters out before a single brought home the runner on second. PLNU would go down in order in their half of the ninth.
Quemada went four innings striking out four allowing two runs, only one being earned, but was tagged with the loss. Luke Mattson of UCSD received his second win of the season, and Noah Conlon recorded his second save.
