SAN DIEGO-Parker Scalzo's first half goal was supplemented by a
Corey Lundeen flick as the Point Loma Sea Lions (7-2-1 overall, 4-0-0 PacWest) nabbed Head Coach
Phil Wolf's 200
th career win with a 2-1 victory over the Holy Names Hawks (4-5-1 overall, 2-2-0 PacWest) Saturday afternoon at the PLNU Soccer Field.
While the result is what Point Loma was after, cementing a perfect home stand and extending their winning streak to seven matches, the one blemish was their first goal conceded in their last seven matches.
"The way that we play and the way we are trying to do things," Wolf said in regards to the scoreless streak. "We ask all our players to defend and all of our player to attack, we ask a lot of our players. It's a group effort and it obviously starts with the goalkeeper and moves through the team."
Scalzo found empty space in the 28
th minute, on a beautiful pass from
Teague Anderson, leading the forward into open space. Scalzo chipped the keeper, lofting a high arching toss to the empty space on the right side of the net to give Point Loma the early lead.
Point Loma maintained that lead for nearly 40 minutes, as Lundeen received a flick from
Evan Janson. Lundeen found himself facing the Holy Names keeper and laced a shot under the bottom left arm of the goalie to double the Point Loma lead to 2-0.
Holy Names finally broke through, snapping Point Loma's shutout streak in the 73
rd minute, on a corner. Joel Rosales headed home the service from Pablo Ramirez Belmont to cut the score line to 2-1.
As Thursday's match against Dominican stands as a no contest, the Sea Lions added 73 scoreless minutes to their streak of six matches without conceding a goal. The total stretch was 638 minutes without a goal dating all the way back to September 11
th and spanning parts of eight matches.
"At the end of the day, if you look at my two tenures (at APU and Point Loma) as a head coach, that's a lot of good players and a lot of good assistant coaches that have helped along the way." Wolf reflected on his milestone victory.
His current record at PLNU is 80-61-18 in the middle of his tenth season.
The Sea Lions will hit the road for four matches, beginning with three in Hawaii over the next two weeks. They will return to the mainland to play Azusa Pacific on the road before concluding the regular season against Concordia at home on Thursday, November 11
th for Senior Day.
