SAN DIEGO – Point Loma turned to a familiar formula for its fifth-straight win on Saturday, scoring one goal in each half while holding the opponents scoreless as the Sea Lions defeated Academy of Art 2-0 at the PLNU Soccer Field.
The fifth-consecutive shutout win for the Sea Lions now makes them 2-0 for six points atop the PacWest standings. Point Loma is now 5-2-1, while Academy of Art has dropped to 0-6-1 with a 0-2 record in conference matches.
Seth Ketterer, who has been the PacWest's best goalkeeper statistically so far this year, made four saves for his fourth shutout of the season. The Urban Knights outshot Point Loma early in the match, but Ketterer denied every opportunity. After Wednesday's win over Concordia, head coach
Phil Wolf said that the team needed to start limiting the number of shots it allowed, and that goal was achieved in the second half with the Urban Knights only attempting three shots in the period.
The first and eventual game-winning goal was a rocket by
Kyle Hoh. Academy of Art tried to clear the ball out of the ball, but the clearance didn't go far enough.
Abel Balogh headed the ball back into the box. After one bounce, Hoh took the ball out of the air and launched it into the top shelf for the first goal of the match and the first goal of the senior defender's collegiate career.
That goal came right at the end of the first half and the next goal came in the 62
nd minute.
Teague Anderson got the ball in the corner and sent a low cross on the ground in front of the mouth of the goal. The cross got past the goalkeeper and
Corey Lundeen sprinted to the back post to redirect the cross into the back of the net. It was Lundeen's fourth goal of the year, tying him with
Parker Scalzo for the most goals in the PacWest.
The Sea Lions' goalless streak is now at 475 minutes with Ketterer making 20 saves during that stretch. Point Loma's defense now has the second-best goals-against average in the PacWest as a team with a league-best five shutouts.
Point Loma will next play against Biola on Wednesday in the third PacWest match of the season. Biola has won its only PacWest contest of the year, beating Academy of Art on Thursday. The Sea Lions won both matches against the Eagles in the spring and has gone 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings.
