HILO, Hawai'i—At the end of a long road trip, the Point Loma Sea Lions (9-3-2 overall, 6-1-1 PacWest) found just enough to close out a winning road trip to the islands with a 1-0 victory over the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans (4-7-1 overall, 2-5-1 PacWest) Wednesday afternoon.
Parker Scalzo delivered a left-footed blast in the 18
th minute to beat the keeper and give Point Loma the, would be, difference.
"We were good in the first half," Point Loma Head Coach
Phil Wolf said. "And you could say 'could have, should have' been up three or four goals. We created plenty of good chances that we just didn't take.
Fortunately, Parker took one of those chances."
From there, it was on the heavily tested defense of the Sea Lions to keep the shutout.
"They were pushing for the goal." Wolf said. "For us, we had to try and keep the clean sheet at the end of the tough game and the tough three-game stretch."
After a furious pace in the first half where Point Loma took nine shots, they mustered just one in the second half and contended with the Vulcans holding the offensive edge.
The back line anchored by
Dalton Kinney and
Jack Murphy helped prevent that edge from becoming an onslaught.
"We had some really standout performances." Wolf said. "Our back group was fantastic. Dalton, Jack, and Seth were really good today."
Goalkeeper
Seth Ketterer was pressed into action with a pair of saves in the second half.
"A clean sheet at Hilo, on that field, under the conditions is something I'm proud of the guys for." Wolf said. "Seth had to make some big saves. Jack had to move into the middle and did a really good job."
The Sea Lions will return to the mainland but remain on the road, closing out a four-game road trip against Azusa Pacific on Thursday, November 4
th at 7:30pm.
