SAN DIEGO----While they started fast, the Point Loma Sea Lions (12-9 overall, 8-5 PacWest) pushed the Chaminade Silverswords (21-5 overall, 11-3 PacWest) to five sets before falling 3-2 Thursday night inside Golden Gymnasium.
The momentum of the match swung drastically with a string of long rallies and long runs punctuated with a slew of aces.
From the start, Hommes stepped out with five kills to give Point Loma the early 12-7 lead, which forced Chaminade to take a timeout.
But Chaminade turned the tide after that and scored nine of the next eleven points to take a 16-14 lead, forcing a Point Loma timeout.
Point Loma responded behind
Bailey Williams and
Alexis Soncrant and a block from Hommes and
Madie Fox tied the set at 19.
After Chaminade's second timeout, Williams delivered consecutive aces to regain the lead.
Point Loma built a lead to three before Chaminade cut it to 23-22. But Hommes' kill gave Point Loma set point and
Claire Smith put away the set to give the Sea Lions a 25-22 win.
The Sea Lions jumped out to a 5-3 lead before Chaminade scored the next six points forcing Point Loma timeout.
The Silverswords would open up their lead to eight at 16-8 before a service error got Point Loma the side out.
Chaminade closed out the set 25-13 to tie the match at one set a piece.
Down 10-4 in the third, Point Loma battled back thanks to major contributions from Soncrant, Williams and
Grace Hicks.
Hicks' kill and ace pushed the Sea Lions to an 18-15 advantage. After Chaminade came within a point, Smith delivered a pair of kills to buoy the lead to 23-18 for Point Loma.
The Sea Lions earned set point at 24-19 after an attack veered long from the Silverswords, and Hicks put away the set with a powerful attack that deflected off of Chaminade. Point Loma won the third set 25-20.
The fourth set jockeyed back and forth before Chaminade edged ahead 20-17. The Silverswords closed out the set 25-20 to even the match at two sets each.
Chaminade took a 6-4 lead in the fifth set, causing Point Loma to take an early timeout.
Smith came out of the timeout by tooling the block to earn side out for the Sea Lions.
Maggie Wolf then dumped one over to tie the set at six.
But the Silverswords scored the next three points to force another Sea Lion's timeout. Chaminade maintained the advantage and closed out the match 15-9, taking the match three sets to two.
Hommmes, Fox, and Smith all had nine kills for the Sea Lions while Williams added seven. Hicks and
Rachael Schlect added important plays on key sequences for Point Loma as well.
Point Loma wraps up the home stand with a 2:00pm match against Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday inside Golden Gymnasium.
