FRESNO, Calif---Early season jitters were erased by an impeccable offensive show from
Hugh Baxter and the Point Loma Sea Lions (1-0 overall) pulled away in the second half to an 85-68 win over the Stanislaus State Warriors (0-1 overall) Friday night at the Special Events Center in Fresno.
Baxter was a perfect 10-10 from the field and finished with a team high 18 points.
"Hugh had a great night offensively for us." Head Coach
Matt Logie said. "He's very efficient and let the game come to him which allowed him to play in a flow state for much of the night."
Brock Mackenzie drilled a contested three to get Point Loma on the scoreboard immediately.
But as the teams exchanged leads throughout the first half, it took a fairly balanced attack for Point Loma to pull ahead.
That was until Baxter got rolling. The senior delivered 15 points in the first half, leading a Sea Lion team that shot 51% from the field, to an eight point lead at the break.
Point Loma hit 13 three's and made their first ten free-throws as the margin began to widen midway through the second half stretching the lead to as much as 20.
Three other Sea Lions would hit double figures, along with Baxter as Point Loma continued to hit shots in the second half.
The second half continued to go Point Loma's way behind a combination of
Brian Goracke's 17 and
Luke Haupt's 15.
Myles Franklin rounded out the scorers in double figures with 10.
"Goracke was huge for us tonight," Logie said. "Giving us a a nice offensive spark off the bench and Luke settled down in the second half and finished the game strong.
Ben Okhotin led Point Loma with 10 boards, and was one point shy of a double-double, ending with 9.
"I was proud of how our defense adjusted." Logie added. "As with most first games of the year, you don't always know what your'e going to face ahead of time but I thought our defense got stronger as the night went on and we did a great job on the glass."
Point Loma concludes the FPU Crossover against Cal State East Bay Saturday night at 6:00pm at the Special Events Center in Fresno.
