SAN DIEGO---Even though they never trailed, the Point Loma Sea Lions (2-0 overall) received their biggest wake-up call thus far, in a 68-60 win over the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (0-2 overall) Saturday night inside Golden Gymnasium.
Point Loma overcame a three-minute drought in the second half immediately prior to ripping off a 15-4 run that swelled their lead to 19. Still, the Broncos would cut the game to two possessions before the Sea Lions were able to hold on to win number two.
"We talk about momentum a lot." Point Loma Head Coach
Charity Elliott said after the win. "When the other team has it, we try to go back to what we know and what we need to do. We talk a lot about growth mindset. This was a game we need to learn and grow from. That's one of the positives that come out of a game like this."
There were plenty of positive right on the surface, as the Sea Lions led for 39 minutes and 16 seconds. Senior guard
Cara Liggins was a steady hand from the field, leading the way with 15 points.
Four different Sea Lions followed with 9 points each, including
Haylee Saurette,
Ellie Turk,
Allie Carreon and
Annika Thayer.
"We have a lot of people who are able to be that spark plug for us." Elliott said. "Tonight, it really was a combination of people stepping up. That's a true strength of our team."
Another strength on Saturday was the Sea Lion's commitment to the glass. After Elliott challenged her guards to be aware of Pomona's potential for long rebounds after a barrage of three's, her team answered the bell by being plus 10 on the glass overall with ten different players snagging multiple rebounds.
"I'm so blown away by their commitment for being for each other and for the team." Elliott beamed. "You don't see one person pouting or upset, everybody is really trying to buy in the best they know how. That's a really special quality of an individual, but when that's a quality of a team, it's extremely unique. It gives me a lot of hope for how we're going to be able to grow this team."
Point Loma will complete their season opening home-stand inside Golden Gymnasium on Tuesday night against Cal State San Marcos at 7:30pm.
