SAN DIEGO---Turnovers and second chance points were enough to undo the Point Loma Sea Lions (2-1 overall) in a 75-62 loss to the Cal State San Marcos Cougars (1-0 overall) Tuesday night inside of Golden Gymnasium.
While the Sea Lions started the game by going toe-to-toe with the Cougars, miscues led a double-digit deficit at the break.
"The good thing about this team is they care so much." Point Loma Head Coach
Charity Elliott said. "But sometimes that means we're trying too hard to make something happen."
The first quarter was back and forth with Point Loma rallying around Hailey Saurette early on.
After a mid-quarter drought,
Cara Liggins found
Annika Thayer to spark the offense.
Allie Carreon hit back to back three's to put Point Loma on an 8-0 run before a San Marcos timeout.
San Marcos would settle in and closed out the quarter strong to lead 17-16 after the first.
The Cougars dictated the pace in the second quarter and forced a myriad of Point Loma turnovers, 14 in the half, which led to 22 points for San Marcos and equated to a 44-27 deficit at the half.
Point Loma's turnovers were still problematic in the third quarter as San Marcos stretched their lead to as many as 27 in the third quarter before the Sea Lions pulled to 62-40 at the end of the period.
San Marcos had fifteen 2
nd chance points in the first three quarters that also proved costly for the Sea Lions.
"They beat us to 50/50 balls." Elliott said. "A ball is on the ground or a ball is getting tipped, they were the first ones too. We control our effort and we did not do that tonight. There's no failing, there's learning. Tonight, hopefully we learned some very valuable lessons."
Still, the Sea Lions found moments throughout the game when the shots were falling, as
Ellie Turk hit three triples.
Liggins and Carreon led the Sea Lions with 12 points each while
Ellie Turk finished with 11.
Point Loma will hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Carson to play Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday at 5:30pm.
