SAN DIEGO---A rejuvenated defense allowed the Point Loma Sea Lions (3-2 overall) to get their offense going in a 78-54 win over the San Diego Christian Hawks (0-4 overall) Monday night inside of Golden Gymnasium.
Points of turnover and 2
nd chance points sparked the Sea Lions until the offense began to connect consistently, but the defense was consistent from the beginning.
"We didn't shoot the basketball like we're capable of tonight." Logie said. "But we did play a better brand of defense. We learned a lot from last week that will help us moving forward and our guys were able to take those lessons and put them in action tonight."
Despite a slow start from deep, Point Loma created points thanks to second chances.
Luke Haupt was the first to get the action started, extending the Sea Lions first possession and then scoring the game's first bucket.
Point Loma also neutralized the slow start by controlling the turnover game. The Sea Lions turned the ball over just twice in the first half, while forcing 12 turnovers from the Hawks, turning that into 14 points.
"I thought our guys did a good job taking care of the basketball." Logie said. "It's uncharacteristic for our guys to turn the ball over like we did last week. I thought we tightened up the things that
But San Diego Christian hung around in the first half thanks to 5 first half three-pointers on just ten attempts.
The Sea Lions would use a couple of late three's in the period to wipe that away, however. And
Brock Mackenzie nailed a right-wing three as time expired to put Point Loma up 38-29 at the half.
The offense sorted out in the 2
nd half with
Hugh Baxter and
Ben Okhotin knocking down three's to settle them in. Point Loma also received excellent contributions from
Trey Anderson off the bench who made a couple of acrobatic buckets while snagging five rebounds and doling out two assists in his first 12 minutes on the floor.
"I thought Trey's energy was infectious." Logie said. "And that's what he gives us on a daily basis. He pushes the tempo which gets guys good shots in transition. And he plays with great spirit. He did all those things tonight and it really impacted the game."
Overall, the defense continued to be solid as Point Loma forced 19 total turnovers and held SDCC to just 30% from the field in the 2nd half.
All 13 Sea Lions would end up contributing as Point Loma opened up the lead with a 10-0 run at the start of the second half and see the lead hit 27 with just over five and a half minutes to play.
Mackenzie finished as the leading scorer in the game with 14 points in just over 22 minutes.
Myles Franklin added 13.
Point Loma will now hit the road for their next five games beginning Friday night in Bellingham, Washington against the Western Washington Vikings, tip off is scheduled for 5:00pm. The next night, they will play Seattle Pacific at 7:00pm in Seattle. They will finish off the road trip, and open December with PacWest match-ups in Hawai'i.
