SEATTLE, Wash.---Down by as much as 24 points midway through the 2
nd half, the Point Loma Sea Lions (3-4 overall) forced overtime before falling 99-91 to the Seattle Pacific Falcons (4-3 overall) Saturday night.
The Sea Lions looked fresh at the start as
Hugh Baxter and
Myles Franklin combined for three 3 pointers to stake Point Loma to a lead during the first eight minutes of the game.
Seattle Pacific kept pace with the hot-shooting, though, and matched Point Loma's six total three's in the first half. But SPU's edge came from a plus-six advantage on the glass which turned into three-more field goals. They also were 6-6 from the free-throw line in the half, while PLNU missed the only attempt they had from the line in the first 20 minutes.
The second half started much slower as the team's combined for just 10 points in the first four minutes of the half, with
Luke Haupt ending SPU's 7-0 run to start the period and trimming the Seattle Pacific lead back to 16.
The game seemed to slip away in the middle portion of the 2
nd Half as Seattle Pacific grew the lead to as much as 24. Point Loma kicked it into gear after the under 12 timeout and pulled within eight points in before the timeout with 7:33 to play.
Brock Mackenzie nailed a three from the right wing to cut the difference to five points with 4:42 in the 2
nd half.
After an SPU free-throw, Baxter drilled a three from the top of the key to pull within three, before Mackenzie's layup made it a one point game.
As Seattle Pacific continued at the free-throw line as Point Loma was forced to foul to extend the game, Point Loma continued to excel from three in the second half, shooting 57% from deep. Mackenzie hit another three to pull within one before SPU added one more free-throw for an 85-83 advantage with just 7 seconds remaining.
Luke Haupt drove the length of the floor and missed the layup before tipping it in to tie the game at 85 and force overtime.
Seattle Pacific raced out to a 93-87 to start the period before Point Loma pulled back within two. But more free throws for Seattle Pacific helped ice the game.
SPU was 21-25 from the free-throw line while Point Loma shot just four free-throws all game, making three.
For Mackenzie, his 27 points are the most since he closed out 2019 with 34 points against Biola in the PacWest championship and third highest output of his career.
Point Loma will continue on the road, opening conference play in Hawai'i on Thursday, December 2
nd against Hawai'i Pacific.
