HONOLULU, Hawai'i---A slippery, uneven ballgame tipped towards the Point Loma Sea Lions (4-4 overall, 1-0 PacWest), as they knocked off the Hawai'i Pacific Sharks (3-4 overall, 0-2 PacWest) 66-60 Thursday night at The Shark Tank.
There were ten lead changes and seven ties as neither team was able to grab a double-digit lead until the final minute.
The opening half saw the lead change hands eight times, alone, and the teams were even at four separate times in the period. While the Sea Lions were consistently exchanging buckets with the Sharks, PLNU led for just five minutes out of the first twenty.
The half was practically split right down the middle except for PLNU's domination in the paint. The Sea Lions scored 16 points inside, while the Sharks had just six.
Seven different Sea Lions scored in the first half, with six of those registering multiple field goals.
Myles Franklin's 7 points led Point Loma to a 35-33 lead at the break.
That lead was quickly erased when Hawai'i Pacific came out firing to start the half and hit a pair of three's to spur an 11-0 run before the first media timeout of the half. That was compounded by the Sea Lions starting just 0-9 from three in the first six minutes of the half.
But the Sea Lions quickly responded with a 12-0 run, including
Luke Haupt's right-wing three to put PLNU back in front 47-44.
The teams continued to jockey for the lead, but it was
Brian Goracke's big 2
nd half that boosted the Sea Lions. Goracke was 4-7 from the field in ten minutes, scoring 11 of his points in that stretch.
Franklin continued to be a reliable scorer as well, going back to back with Goracke on a pair of 3's as PLNU's 61-53 lead with 3:14 to play was the largest the Sea Lions had built to that point.
Point Loma put the clamps on the Sharks defensively. After HPU shot 50% from the field in the first half, the Sea Lions held them to just 31% on 9-29 from the field.
Franklin and Goracke each finished with 15 points, Haupt and
Hugh Baxter each added 10 points for Point Loma in the win.
Point Loma was plus ten on the glass, with Goracke hauling in a game high 9 boards. Point Loma ended the game outscoring HPU 20-10 in the pain as well, holding the edge on the inside.
It is Point Loma's sixth straight win over the Sharks dating back to 2018. However, this was the first time the two teams have matched up since January of 2020. The Sea Lions now lead the all-time head-to-head series 11-10, the first time PLNU has led the matchup since 1996.
Point Loma will stay in Honolulu as it continues the island tour with its second PacWest game of the year on Saturday against Chaminade at 5:00pm (PT).
