HILO, Hawai'i---Down early, the Point Loma Sea Lions (4-5 overall, 1-1 PacWest) never could find their footing in a slippery 84-73 loss to the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans (4-5 overall, 1-1 PacWest) Monday night.
Hilo started very quickly and even in Point Loma's best runs, frequent stoppages for the slippery floor along with the Vulcans aggressive offense combined to slow down the Sea Lions. Point Loma's 20 turnovers also hamstrung multiple comeback attempts.
Down 17-5 early, the Sea Lions roared back behind consecutive three's from Miles Franklin and
Ben Okhotin.
Hilo would push the lead to as much as 16 in the first half, but Point Loma hit three of its six first half three's in the final two minutes to prevent the Vulcans from running away in the first half.
Okhotin led the Sea Lions with 11 first half points. But the Vulcans advantage came with 20 points in the paint and one more three than the Sea Lions for a 44-33 difference at the break.
In the 2
nd half,
Luke Haupt led Point Loma, finishing with a game-high 24 points while adding 10 rebounds.
But the Sea Lions 20 turnovers led to 21 points for the Vulcans and Hilo was plus-10 in the category, essentially equating to the difference in the game.
Myles Franklin was 4-6 from three for the Sea Lions, finishing with 18 points.
Point Loma will return home for the first time in five games, hosting the Academy of Art on Saturday at 3:00pm in Golden Gymnasium.
