SAN DIEGO---A back and forth ball game slipped away as the game tying jumper rimmed out in the Point Loma Sea Lions (4-6 overall, 1-2 PacWest) 76-74 loss to the Academy of Art Urban Knights (7-3 overall, 3-0 PacWest) Saturday afternoon in Golden Gymnasium.
The return of
Kaden Anderson and
Ben Okhotin's red-hot shooting pushed Point Loma out to an early lead, but the Urban Knights chipped away later in the half to pull even at halftime, 33-33.
Anderson's game high 19 points helped balance out the Point Loma offense and
Ben Okhotin had 3 three-pointers in each half, finishing with 18 points to lead the Point Loma offense.
But the Urban Knights had much of their success inside, scoring 40 of their 76 points in the paint. They were also extremely effective in the second half, shooting 51% from the field and hitting four of their six three's in the second half.
The Academy of Art took advantage of a late lead and hit 9-11 free-throws to buoy the lead.
Brock Mackenzie added 17 points for the Sea Lions and was a factor late. Down three, Mackenzie appeared to draw an important three-point play attempt, when he was fouled in the act of shooting. But the foul was ruled prior to the attempt and Mackenzie only shot two free-throws. He hit the first to make it a two-point game. After missing the second free-throw, Point Loma got the offensive rebound and had an opportunity with 1 second left to tie the game.
But the shot bounced off the rim, to close the game.
Point Loma will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host the Azusa Pacific Cougars at 7:30pm on December 18
