SAN DIEGO---Matching their most efficient night from behind the arc all season, the Point Loma Sea Lions (5-6 overall, 2-2 PacWest) upended the Azusa Pacific Cougars (5-5 overall, 3-1 PacWest) 94-82 in a conference contest Saturday afternoon in Golden Gymnasium.
A 50% evening from beyond the arc with 13 made three's opened up the Point Loma offense, keying four different players who eclipsed 20 points in the victory.
Point Loma was also extremely stingy, only committing eight turnovers, which equated to just 9 APU points. On the other hand, the Sea Lions converted 14 Cougar turnovers into 22 points.
The Sea Lions raced out to an early lead thanks to
Ben Okhotin knocking down 4 three-pointers in the first ten minutes.
Point Loma's offense was hotter from deep than it was from inside the arc, making three of their first four shots from outside.
Okhotin's 13 points in the first half, exclusively from the outside with one free-throw on a four-point play, was balanced by 11 points, mostly in the paint, from
Kaden Anderson.
The Sea Lions shot 50% from outside in the first half, hitting 8 of 16 attempts. Part of that success was because of the way Point Loma valued the basketball, turning it over just five times in the half.
Point Loma widened the lead through the first ten minutes of the second half behind five more three-pointers with Okhotin, Anderson,
Brock Mackenzie and
Luke Haupt all contributing from downtown.
While Point Loma would enjoy a 19 point lead just before the midway point in the second half, the game would drastically slow down over the last 13 minutes.
APU hit 20 of 22 free-throws in the second half, closing the gap as the clock was stopped, and created foul trouble.
Point Loma's double-digit advantage still forced Azusa into foul trouble of their own and Point Loma closed it out by going 19-20 at the stripe themselves in the second half. The teams combined for 53 free-throws, 42 of which came in the second half.
Still, Point Loma made good on them with Anderson, Haupt, Mackenzie and Okhotin all having perfect nights at the stripe.
Those four Sea Lions also each delivered 20 points apiece with Anderson and Haupt both tallying 24 points. Mackenzie finished with 21 and Okhotin added 20.
Azusa's McKelary Robertson came off the bench with a game-high 26 as bench scoring was the only category that APU edged PLNU.
Okhotin and
Trey Anderson combined for all 22 of Point Loma's bench scoring.
The Sea Lions will wrap up the 2021 portion of the schedule on Monday afternoon when they host high-octane Pacific University (Oregon) at 1:00pm inside Golden Gymnasium.
