SAN DIEGO---Picking up where they left off in a suspended contest from nearly a month ago, the Point Loma Sea Lions (10-4-1 overall, 6-2-0 PacWest) delivered a lightning quick comeback to defeat the Dominican Penguins (7-5-2 overall, 2-5-1 PacWest) 3-2 Monday afternoon at the PLNU Soccer Field.
Point Loma picked up right where they left off with Dominican, delivering a frantic pace that saw ten shots in the first twenty minutes.
Both teams provided plenty of pace and aggressiveness with near misses coming early.
In the 19
th minute, Point Loma capitalized with
Townsend Meyer finding space along the right side and delivering a cross square at the top of the 18' to
Teague Anderson, who ripped the shot into the bottom left part of the net for the early 1-0 lead.
That would be short lived as Dominican responded in less than a minute and Joe Blakely tied the match at one.
Point Loma held a heavy advantage offensively in the first half, registering 13 shots, including six on goal. By contrast, Dominican took five shots and put two on goal.
The Penguins did edge Point Loma in drawing corners, earning six in the first 45 minutes.
The second half continued at a quick pace but the opportunities were further apart for both teams.
Dominican was able to wrestle the way a lead in the 78
th minute when a through ball setup Christopher Barrios at the top of the box. Barrios shot caromed off the inside of the left post and bounced into the net to put the Penguins up 2-1.
With their backs against the wall in the 84th, Point Loma pushed ball forward into traffic in front of the box. The ball deflected off the keeper, before
Parker Scalzo slid in and knocked the ball just across the line for the tying goal, evening things at 2.
Just four minutes later, the Sea Lions placed the ball in front of the box again with
Austin Lavell setting up Scalzo for a shot that beat the keeper to lift Point Loma ahead 3-2.
That sealed the needed victory for Point Loma, keeping them within reach of a postseason appearance. They will need to get the result again on Thursday when they host PacWest rival Concordia at 2:30pm for Senior Day. The Women's game will kick off the festivities at Noon on the PLNU Soccer Field.
