SAN DIEGO---A career performance and a difficulty holding onto possessions sunk the Point Loma Sea Lions (6-5 overall, 2-3 PacWest) in an 85-55 loss to the Azusa Pacific Cougars (8-1 overall, 4-0 PacWest)
Despite a close game at the half, Point Loma saw an early lead slip away as Azusa Pacific missed just eight shots in the entire second half as they pulled away.
Point Loma staked the early lead thanks to the outside shooting of
Ellie Turk, who knocked down her first two attempts, including a transition three, setup by
Alix Henderson.
But after holding a 23-22 edge, the Sea Lions saw the Cougars catch fire from the field. APU shot just 25% in the first quarter, but increased their percentage in each of the next three periods including an 11-16 third quarter (68%) which included 4 three-pointers.
APU opened it up in the third quarter, hitting their first six shots en route to scoring 28 points in the period. Point Loma shot just 26% from the field in the period for 11 total points.
Azusa's Kayla Shaw knocked down 7 three's to propel the APU offense, finishing with a game-high 31 points, and providing the difference in the game.
Haylee Saurette finished with 16 points to lead the Sea Lions. Turk and
Cara Liggins each finished with 10 points.
Point Loma closes the fall portion of the schedule on Monday morning when they host San Diego Christian inside Golden Gymnasium at 11:00 am.
