SAN DIEGO -
Ashlee Watkins goal and a sparking performance from the defense was all the Point Loma women's soccer team needed in a 1-0 win over Westmont. (Feb. 10)
Â
The goal came in the 47th minute when
Naomi Ellis received a pass from
Jazmin Valencia on the right side of the field and took it to the endline. She sent a cross to the middle of the box on the far side of the net and Watkins deposited it in the net for the game-winner.
Â
The Sea Lions would not get another goal but they continued to keep the pressure on the Warriors the rest of the match, outshooting them 9-1 in the second half.
Â
Watkins almost had another goal in the 72nd minute off a corner kick by
Mara Sovde, but was only prevented the score by a great save from Westmont's goalkeeper, Kailey Meyers.
Â
Point Loma's defense also played outstanding the final 70 minutes of the match to post its fifth straight home shutout and extend its shutout streak to 505 minutes at the PLNU Soccer Field.
Â
Team Records
Point Loma (2-0-0, 1-0-0 PacWest), Westmont (0-2-0)
Â
Turning Point
Midway through the first half, Westmont had more energy and had the Sea Lions on their heals. However, PLNU's
Courtney Seman got a shot on goal from a corner kick that was saved at the post by a Warrior defender and that seemed to bring all the momentum back to the Sea Lions. From there on they would outshoot WC 12-2.
