SAN DIEGO – After PLNU's first match was postponed against Concordia, the Sea Lions women's tennis team was ready to get the season underway against Biola. After going down early PLNU responded and in singles play and game away with a 4-3 victory over the Eagles (Feb. 20).
Point Loma got off to a fast start as Samantha Nielson and
Faith Pearson won their doubles match 6-4 giving PLNU the early momentum. Biola quickly responded defeating the No. 1 PLNU duo of
Gabi Armas and
Angelique Friedrich. The doubles point came down to the No. 3 position.
Rachel Whittington and
Thelma Sepulveda fought to the end but came up just short losing their match 5-6. The doubles point went to the Eagles and Point Loma trailed going into singles play 1-0.
Thelma Sepulveda came out and played an almost perfect match in the No. 3 position defeating her opponent 6-0 and 6-1.
Faith Pearson played a great match as well defeating her opponent 6-4 and 6-3, with Pearson winning her match PLNU took their first lead of the day, 2-1.
The Sea Lions would drop a match before picking up another point as
Gabi Armas battled with her opponent ultimately taking the match in two set by a score of 6-4 and 7-5. Leading 3-2 PLNU was looking for one more point from either
Angelique Friedrich or
Amanda Letzring. Angelique wound up losing her match in three sets, but
Amanda Letzring would play hero for the Sea Lions.
Letzring fell in her first set but persevered and won the next two to give Point Loma the win. The win gives the Sea Lions a four-game winning streak dating back to the 2020 season. They start the season right where they left off in 2020 with a win.
