PLNU SALVAGES SERIES SPLIT VERSUS CONCORDIA

IRVINE, Calif. – Point Loma split their opening PacWest series versus Concordia. A late offensive surge was not enough for PLNU to come out victorious in game one, but they put that behind them and won game two 4-2 (March 20).

Game One: A late surge by the Point Loma offense came up just short as they fell 11-10 in game one. Scott Anderson led the Sea Lions with three hits, while Michael Whiteside's three-run double was enough to lead the team in RBI's (3).

Point Loma got on the board first in the top of the second after a Scott Anderson single brought Brett O'Toole around to score after he led off the inning with a double. Concordia responded right back scoring a single run in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Concordia kept that momentum as they scored in each of the next three innings. Concordia would bust out to a 4-1 lead after scoring three in the third. They proceeded that with a single run in the fourth and fifth.

The Sea Lion bats started to come alive in the sixth as they pushed a single run across. The Sea Lions carried that momentum with them into the seventh inning where they retook the lead. PLNU pushed across six runs on seven hits, most notably getting three on one swing.

Michael Whiteside roped a ball down the left-field line for a three-run, two-out double that put the Sea Lions up 7-6. Point Loma would tack on one more before the inning ended.

After getting a shutdown inning in the seventh, Point Loma was unable to do the same in the eighth. The Eagles exploded for five runs in the eighth to retake the lead 11-8.

Point Loma tried to keep their end-of-game heroics going but was unable to tie or take the lead in the ninth. James Halpin doubled in two runs but the Sea Lions were unable to get anymore. They feel 11-10 in game one.

Game Two: Point Loma kept the bats hot in game two of the doubleheader scoring early and keeping that lead to hold on to victory 4-2.

The Sea Lions struck first again after Baxter Halligan singled to bring home Ricardo Yoquigua in the top of the first inning putting the Sea Lions up 1-0. Concordia did not let the Sea Lion fast start affect them as they scored one of their own in the home half of the first inning.

The Eagles then scored again in the third taking advantage of a few Sea Lions miscues. PLNU would tighten up and not allow a run the rest of the game.

The Point Loma offense came alive late in the ball game scoring two in the fifth to retake the lead, all with two outs. The Sea Lions then extended the lead to two runs after Yoquigua singled to bring home Justin Ledgerwood.

Andrew Amato shut down the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the Sea Lions lead and record his first save of the season.
