SAN DIEGO – The Point Loma men's tennis team picked up their second victory of the week and third in a row after beating Division I opponent Portland State 4-3 (Mar. 26).
Point Loma was able to take command early by capturing the doubles point. The Sea Lions gathered the early edge after
Yuki Okamoto and
Tyler Davis defeated their opponent in the No. 1 position. The Vikings came right back to tie up doubles play by winning in the No. 3 position. It came down to
Tales Silva and
Alejandro Castaneda in the No. 2 position. The duo was able to capture the point after the set went to a tiebreaker which they won 7-3.
Point Loma got on the board right away in singles play after Silva made quick work of his opponent winning in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-4. The Vikings responded by picking up a win in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to even the match 2-2.
David Strassburger got PLNU back in front with a hard-fought victory in the No. 4 position.
The two Sea Lions left were
Alejandro Castaneda and
Lukas Schuster. PLNU needed just one of them to win their match to pull off the victory. Castaneda was the one that stepped up. Alejandro beat his opponent in straight sets 6-3 and 7-5 to secure the victory for PLNU and bring their record back to .500.
