SAN DIEGO – The Point Loma men's tennis team played their second nationally-ranked opponent in the past four days, the No. 20 ranked Vulcans of Hawaii Hilo proved to be too much for the Sea Lions as they dropped the match 6-1 (March 9).
Point Loma came out early and took the lead on two of the three doubles courts, but Hawaii Hilo clawed their way back and was able to take the doubles point.
Yuki Okamoto and
Tyler Davis were unable to close out a 4-1 lead as they lost 6-4. In the No. 2 position
Tales Silva and
Alejandro Castaneda also took an early lead before dropping their match 6-4. The Vulcans made it a clean sweep defeating PLNU in the No. 3 position and taking a 1-0 lead to singles play.
PLNU got the best of the Vulcans to start singles play.
David Strassburger would even up the match 1-1 after defeating his opponent in straight sets 6-3 and 6-3. The Sea Lions would win two more opening sets but were unable to capitalize on the early momentum. The Vulcans came back and won the final five matches.
Point Loma would fall to No. 20 ranked Hawaii Hilo 6-1.
