SAN DIEGO – The PLNU women's tennis team came a set away from upsetting the No. 20 team in the nation, the Concordia Eagles. The Sea Lions gave the Eagles everything they had but ended up dropping the match 4-3.
Concordia jumped out to an early lead after they gathered the doubles point. The Eagles won 6-3 in the No. 1 position and 6-4 in the No. 2 position to capture the point.
Rachel Whittington and
Thelma Sepulveda were leading 5-4 in their match when Concordia clinched the doubles point.
The Eagles would extend their lead to 2-0 after getting a victory in the No. 1 position, but Point Loma did not back down. They responded right back with two match victories of their own.
Faith Pearson was able to take care of her opponent in straight sets to cut into the deficit.
Point Loma gained more momentum after
Thelma Sepulveda took down the No. 44 ranked singles player in Division II in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3. After Sepulveda defeated her opponent the match was tied 2-2.
Concordia would take the next match jumping into the lead 3-2.
Gabi Armas would tie the match back up after defeating her opponent in the No. 5 position.
The match came down to
Samantha Neilson and Taylor Lau. Neilson took the early edge winning set one 6-1. Lau did not back down and stormed back to win the next two sets and ultimately give Concordia the 4-3 victory over PLNU.
