LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Point Loma baseball team nearly swept Biola in today's doubleheader but ultimately fell in game two and ended up splitting the games. (April 16)
Game one: Point Loma got out to an early lead, but Biola fought back to take the lead late in the game. Point Loma was unfazed and rallied in the top half of the ninth and take a back and forth game by a score of 11-6.
Otto Kemp got the scoring started early with a solo home run in the first inning. Point Loma carried that first inning momentum into the second inning as they plated two more to take a 3-0 lead. After being blanked in the third inning, an
Easton Waterman single in the fourth inning brought in another run to push the PLNU lead to 4-0.
Biola responded scoring at least a run in the next four innings at ultimately taking a 6-4 lead. The Eagles got a run off a solo home run in the fourth then took advantage of a PLNU error in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-2. They would then load the bases and score after Ben Smith bounced into a double play.
The seventh inning was a big one for the Eagles. Biola would score three runs in the inning to take a 6-4 lead headed into the eighth inning.
Point Loma responded in the top half of the eighth inning tied the game back up 6-6. The PLNU defense shut down Biola in the eighth and used the momentum in the ninth. Point Loma exploded in the ninth inning, scoring five runs and taking advantage of multiple Biola errors. The Sea Lions shut down the Eagles in the ninth to win the game 11-6.
Game two: Another back and forth game ultimately went to the Eagles of Biola. The Eagles walked off the Sea Lions in the bottom of the seventh inning winning the game 5-4.
The scoring started early again. Both teams scored two runs in the second inning to keep the game even through two innings. A
Baxter Halligan double brought in two for the Sea Lions, and a sac fly and an infield single brought in two for the Eagles.
For the next three innings, the pitchers and defenses of each team shut the other down keeping the game knotted at 2-2. Biola would take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after the Eagles took advantage of a PLNU error.
With their backs against the wall Point Loma responded. The Sea Lions were down to their last strike but
Otto Kemp delivered a two-run single to tie the game in the seventh.
Needing a shutdown inning to force extra innings, Point Loma was on track to do just that after retiring the first two batters of the inning. The next Eagle hitter would single and then get doubled in to win the game and walk off the Sea Lions, winning 5-4.
