CARSON, Calif. - Carrying the momentum of their comeback victory earlier in the day, the Point Loma volleyball team swept through Stanislaus State 25-19, 25-19 and 25-23 on Friday night at the SoCal Freeway Challenge.
Â
Lauren Phillips dished out 27 assists in the three sets while adding two aces.
Courtney Dyer followed her record-setting performance earlier in the day with 20 digs against the Warriors.
Torina Hommes backed up her own career-best match with a team-leading nine kills.
Claire Smith added eight kills and four blocks.
Madie Fox also had four blocks while putting down seven kills.
Â
Although the scorebook shows a sweep the Sea Lions did not just dominate from the opening point, instead it was their ability to close that was the difference in the match. With the first set tied at 18-18, Point Loma closed out on a 7-1 run to jump out to the 1-0 lead. The second set played out in a similar way as PLNU used a 10-2 run to come back from a 17-15 deficit. The third set looked like it could go either way after Stan State tied the match at 20-20. The Sea Lions answered with four straight points before
Alexis Soncrant ended any thought of a Warriors' comeback with a kill.
