SAN DIEGO – Point Loma has started its season with some of the toughest opponents in the West Region, and on Saturday, the Sea Lions played 2019 Division II quarterfinalist Cal State San Bernardino, which won the match 2-1 at the PLNU Soccer Field.
The Sea Lions held their own against the Coyotes and led for the majority of the match, but CSUSB scored two goals in two minutes in the second half to win the match. Point Loma drops to 0-2-1 on the season, while Cal State San Bernardino is now 1-0-1.
Point Loma scored the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Lucas Purgato assisted
Dalton Kinney, who scored the first goal of the match into the lower-left side of the net. For Kinney, it was his first career goal at Point Loma. Purgato has now recorded at least one assist in four different seasons.
Seth Ketterer made three saves in the first half as the Sea Lions took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Ketterer made one more save at the start of the second half, but in the 64
th minute, the Coyotes finally broke through to end the shutout. Kevin Aguilar scored the first goal and less than two minutes later, Gerardo Flores scored the second goal to take the lead.
Teague Anderson created a chance to tie the score in the 84
th minute, but his shot was saved. The Sea Lions put four out of five shots on goal, while CSUSB took 11 shots, six of which were on goal.
Point Loma will play one more non-conference match before the start of the PacWest season as Westmont visits PLNU Soccer Field for a noon match on Saturday, September 18. Then on September 25, the Sea Lions will play their conference opener on the road against Fresno Pacific. Spectators will be permitted at the match at full capacity.
