Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

POINT LOMA WINS SAN DIEGO COUNTY BATTLE

SAN DIEGO Point Loma hosted a battle of the two NCAA Division II men's soccer programs in the San Diego County, and defeated Cal State San Marcos 2-0 for the Sea Lions' first win of the season at the PLNU Soccer Field on Thursday.

Parker Scalzo scored both goals in the win, getting both goals in the first 20 minutes of the match, and both goals were assisted by Austin Lavell. Seth Ketterer made three saves in goal for the Sea Lions as he recorded his first shutout of the year.

With the win, Point Loma improves to 1-2-1 on the season, while Cal State San Marcos drops to 0-4 with all four losses coming at the hands of PacWest teams. This is the second-consecutive meeting between the two programs that has concluded with a shutout win at home for Point Loma.

The first goal came in the seventh minute after Lavell took a shot that was missed saved, but Point Loma got the rebound. Scalzo took the second shot, which was blocked by the defender. Lavell was the first one to get to the loose ball and settled it with his knee to Scalzo, who shot again and scored into the right side of the net.

Then in the 19th minute, Corey Lundeen sent a long pass down the right sideline to Lavell, who dribbled into the box. He crossed the ball on the ground to Scalzo on the other side of the box, who shot and scored again to take a 2-0 lead. Those are the first two goals for Scalzo this season, and he now has 13 career goals with Point Loma.

The Cougars created opportunities to score in the 69th and 75th minutes, but both times Ketterer made the save to preserve the shutout. It is the second shutout of Ketterer's career along with his 9-save shutout against Concordia in the final match of the spring season.

Point Loma will next play against Westmont at home on Saturday. Kickoff will be at noon. Westmont is an NAIA program that competes in the Golden State Athletic Conference, and has a 2-2 record this season.
