PLNU MSOC vs Westmont

SEA LIONS MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW

9/18/2021 3:58:00 PM

Box Score SAN DIEGO – Point Loma had a clean sheet on the week after picking up a second shutout victory, beating Westmont 1-0 on a penalty kick goal by Jona Oesterling on Saturday afternoon at the PLNU Soccer Field.

The Sea Lions now enter the conference season with a 2-2-1 record, while Westmont drops to 2-3 on the season. The contest was also a brotherly battle between head coaches as Phil Wolf once again faced his older brother, Dave Wolf, winning for the third time in a row.

Ryan Pierce got his first start in goal of the season for the Sea Lions. The reigning PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year recorded a shutout with two saves.

Neither team scored in the first half, but Point Loma controlled possession of the ball for two-thirds of the first half. The Sea Lions put three shots on goal, but all three attempts were saved.

The Sea Lions finally broke through in the 68th minute as the Sea Lions earned a penalty kick. Evan Janson took a shot that was blocked out of bounds to give Point Loma a corner kick, and when the ball was sent into the box, they earned the penalty kick, which Oesterling took.

Oesterling shot with his left foot into the left side of the net. The goalkeeper, Brady Highfill, guessed correctly, but Oesterling's shot beat him to the post for the game-winning goal. It was Oesterling's ninth career collegiate goal and first in a Point Loma uniform.

Pierce made one more save in the rest of the game to preserve the shutout as the Sea Lions earned some momentum going into the conference season, where they will compete for the PacWest's automatic berth into the NCAA postseason.

The conference season starts on September 25 with a trip to Fresno Pacific to play under the lights at 7:30 p.m. Officially, there is one more non-conference contest left on the schedule when Point Loma visits Concordia in Irvine for a non-conference game between two PacWest teams on September 29.
