POINT LOMA SHUTS OUT PENGUINS ON THE ROAD

(SAN RAFAEL, Calif.) Jack Merrill scored and assisted to lead PLNU Men's Soccer to its third straight PacWest victory, as Point Loma shut out Dominican by a 2-0 margin on Saturday afternoon in San Rafael.

After scoring a late game-winner in Thursday's 3-2 win at Jessup, Merrill continued his fine scoring form less than a minute into Saturday's match.

Merrill, who found the back of the net for the third straight match and a team-leading sixth time this season, put the Sea Lions in front just 55 seconds into the game off an assist from James Haynes.

PLNU outshot DUC, 10-3, in the first half as Merrill's goal stood up to give the Sea Lions a 1-0 lead into the break.

Cole Friesen then rounded out the scoring in the 84th minute, off Merrill's assist, to seal the three points for the visitors.

Jeremy Caringella made four saves in goal to preserve the shutout for PLNU, who went a perfect 2-0 on its Northern California trip.

Point Loma (7-3-3 overall, 4-1 PacWest) remains atop the conference standings ahead of Saturday's road match at second-placed Biola (3-1-1). Kickoff in La Mirada is scheduled for 7 p.m.
