(LA MIRADA, Calif.) PLNU Men's Soccer moved atop the PacWest standings with a 2-0 road win at Biola on Saturday night.
Freshman phenoms
Evan Youngflesh and
Jack Merrill scored the goals that propelled Point Loma to its fourth straight win in conference play, as the Sea Lions seek a record-setting fourth consecutive conference crown.
In the 22nd minute,
James Haynes pressured the Eagles' back line and won the ball back for the visitors. Youngflesh then latched onto the loose ball at the top of the box and rifled a left-footed shot into the back of the net to put Point Loma in front.
After leading 1-0 at the break, PLNU then outshot BU in the second half, 9-5. That included Merrill's penalty kick goal in the 80th minute that doubled the Sea Lions' lead and sealed the three points.
Merrill scored for the fourth straight game with his team-leading seventh goal of the season, while Youngflesh's five goals on the year rank second on the Sea Lions.
Goalkeeper
Jeremy Caringella made six saves, including four in the first half, to preserve PLNU's second straight shutout victory.
