SEA LIONS' STREAK, HOMESTAND CONCLUDE VS. BIOLA

SAN DIEGO- The red-hot run of the Point Loma Sea Lions (8-5, 4-1 PacWest) ended at the tail end of their longest home-stand, falling in four sets to the Biola Eagles (7-4, 2-1 PacWest) Wednesday night inside Golden Gymnasium.

The highly anticipated match began as even as expected with both sides jockeying for position in the early stages of all four sets but ultimately the Sea Lions struggled to maintain consistency throughout.

"We've got plenty of things that got in the way," Point Loma Head Coach Jonathan Scott reflected after the match. "But this is the type of match that shows we don't do (certain things) consistently enough."

Biola finally created some separation at the end of the first set, forcing set point at 24-22. The Sea Lions avoided two set points with Claire Smith delivering the kill and a Biola attack error tying the match at 24. But Biola rebounded and closed out the opening set 26-24.

The Sea Lions fell behind 19-14 in set two and Biola would force set point at 24-19, but Point Loma responded with four consecutive points before Biola finished off the set at 25-19, taking a two-set lead.

Point Loma responded again in the third set as Biola pulled in front 17-13 before Madie Fox spurred the comeback with three kills among four Point Loma points, forcing a Biola timeout. The Sea Lions pulled ahead 21-18 and then reached set point behind a pair of kills from Torina Hommes at 24-20. Biola fought off a pair of set points before Hommes kept the match alive with another kill, taking the set 25-22.

Statistically, the third set was Point Loma's cleanest on attack, hitting .250 and scored 12 of the last 17 points to prolong the match.

Ironically, that was also the set Biola had its highest hitting percentage of the night as both teams minimized the errors.

Biola built a six-point lead in set four at 20-14 and eventually forced match-point at 24-17. The Sea Lions delivered three straight points before falling 25-20.

Smith led the Sea Lions with 9 kills on the night, with Anna Massari and Hommes contributing eight kills apiece.

Courtney Dyer delivered a match-high 36 digs.

The Sea Lions conclude the five-match home stand at 4-1 and now set out on a three-match road trip Saturday in Irvine against Concordia at 5:00pm.
