SAN DIEGO-The final 26 minutes of Thursday night's 91-78 win were all positive as the Point Loma Sea Lions (11-8 overall, 7-4 PacWest) roared past the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans (10-7 overall, 6-4 PacWest) inside Golden Gym.
It was a tale of two segments, as Point Loma found themselves in an early hole before a furious rally closed the first half and put the Sea Lions in position to make their run.
"I thought our attitude changed." Point Loma Head Coach
Matt Logie said. "We had to figure out a different solution and give our guys credit for adjusting and believing. They executed our adjusted. We were able to find a rhythm as the game went along and put together a really good 25-minute stretch of basketball."
The first 10 minutes of the game had Hilo's name written all over it. The Vulcans ballooned an early lead to 14 with six minutes remaining in the first half. Hilo forced Point Loma into 11 first half turnovers, which translated to 11 points for the Vulcans.
Â
It took until the under 4 media timeout for things to switch into Point Loma's favor.
Â
Myles Franklin spurred the Sea Lions in the right direction delivering a 3-pointer and nine total points while doling out a pair of assists.
Kaden Anderson got going at the free-throw line and
Ben Okhotin chipped in a pair of 3's and 8 total points.
Â
Point Loma ended the half with a blazing 15-2 run.
Â
At the half, PLNU still trailed by one but Golden Gym was buzzing as the Sea Lions flipped the momentum.
Â
That paid off from the start of the 2
nd half. Point Loma scored multiple times in the paint to begin the period, but Hilo was steady from beyond the arc and maintained a five-point lead.
Â
The trio of Franklin, Anderson and Okhotin swung the momentum back in favor of Point Loma from the defensive end. Back-to-back blocks from Anderson and Okhotin created shot opportunities for the Sea Lions. While Franklin reeled in a couple of steals that pushed Point Loma ahead with 10 minutes left in the game.
Â
Okhotin led an excellent effort from the Sea Lion's bench, combining with
Brian Goracke to deliver 27 points.
Â
"Brian did a great job." Logie said. "Probably his best defensive game. Last couple weeks he's been playing better and he's been doing better with he's opportunities. That's been great to see because we need him."
Â
That was enough to help Point Loma settle in as they led for a majority of the 2
nd half.
Â
"Our activity level increased as the game went along." Logie said. "We were able to get deflections and then go get 50-50 balls and turn some of those things into transition points."
Â
Anderson's 22 points and 12 rebounds led the team in both categories. Franklin contributed 19 points of his own, with a noteworthy 6 assists and 5 steals.
Â
Brock Mackenzie rounded out the double-digit point scorers with 13.
Â
"That was one of our goals for the game." Logie said. "That was a point of emphasis for us coming in. Obviously, it's great to have Kaden on the glass, he had 5 offensive rebounds. That was a great opportunity for us and we did a pretty good job of executing that in the 2
nd half."
Â
Point Loma's interior play also helped seal the deal as the Sea Lions were +9 on the glass and doubled up Hilo in 2
nd Chance Points (18-9).
Â
"This was a resilient win." Logie said. "Our guys, we were down 14, took a punch to the gut early. Give Hilo credit, they are a good team. They are extremely fast, well-coached, and they came out and pressured the ball really well early. Our guys adjusted and were resilient and that's why we came out on top."
Â
The Sea Lions close the home-stand Saturday afternoon, looking to avenge their only loss of the stretch when they host Chaminade at 4:00pm inside Golden Gymnasium.
