SAN DIEGO---The Point Loma Sea Lions (10-7 overall, 5-5 PacWest) found a physical presence and cooled off the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans (7-6 overall, 4-5 PacWest) in a 67-50 victory Thursday night inside Golden Gymnasium.
Senior
Cara Liggins delivered her fourth consecutive double-double and freshman
Annika Thayer added 16 points and 9 boards as Point Loma withstood Hilo connecting on all four of its first three-point attempts.
"We knew it was going to be a battle," Point Loma Head Coach
Charity Elliott said. "We knew it was going to be a dogfight. Hilo is very scrappy and they play really hard. They can shoot it like crazy. We came ready to fight and to earn it. I thought tonight we earned it. It was everybody."
Point Loma countered Hilo's highly effective three-point by pounding the ball inside. The Sea Lions lead by as much as 8 before Hilo used a perfect half from beyond the arc to turn the table into a 28-27 Vulcan lead at the half.
Point Loma continued to score inside, tallying 16 of its first 27 points in the paint, and worked their way in front of the Vulcans quickly at the start of the 2
nd half.
Hilo started the 3
rd period 0-3 from deep. Back-to-back three's from Hilo quickly flipped the game 41-36 in favor of the Vulcans midway through the period.
Liggins caught fire at the perfect time to help flip the momentum back.
The Sea Lions regained the lead thanks to a 9-0 run in the third, but it was boosted by a layup saving block by
Cara Liggins, who followed it up by draining a three on the other end of the floor.
Thayer contributed more blocks in the fourth, finishing with 4 and helping slow the Vulcans' offensive rhythm.
Liggins was a force in the post, racking up 20 points, snagging 11 boards and rejecting 3 shots.
Thayer finished second in both of those categories while
Alix Henderson rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points and Madi Williams grabbed 7 rebounds.
"We had so many contributors," Elliott said. "We gave them one shot and that's it. The confidence and the poise in the fourth quarter was huge."
Point Loma was excellent on the boards, registering plus-15 on the glass, the biggest rebounding margin of the season.
The Sea Lions were equally good defensively, smothering the Vulcans' 3-point shooting in the second half and holding them to 2-13 over the final 20 minutes.
"They hit a lot of three's at their place." Elliott said. "I thought our players did a great job with the scout and staying locked in. It's fun to see our progression and our confidence grow. It's fun to see others step in to what this team needed."
Point Loma aims to complete a perfect home-stand on Saturday hosting Chaminade at 2:00pm. The Men will follow at 4:00pm inside Golden Gymnasium.
