OAKLAND, Calif---Despite erasing a few large deficits, the Point Loma Sea Lions (7-6 overall, 2-4 PacWest) could not overcame a rough outing from the field and suffered a 70-61 setback to the Academy of Art Urban Knights (6-5 overall, 3-1 PacWest) Thursday afternoon at Holy Names University's Tobin Gymnasium in Oakland, CA.
Due to health and safety restrictions in San Francisco, the game was moved to an alternate venue.
Still, Academy of Art looked right at home, overcoming an initial early lead from Point Loma.
Despite trading buckets for much of the opening quarter, the Academy of Art pulled ahead thanks to some expert three-point shooting from Kaila Murrell. The Urban Knight's reserve guard hit four three's in the first half, helping Art U stake a 22-14 lead at the end of the first period.
The Urban Knight's also converted 13 Point Loma turnovers into 16 points in the first half.
Point Loma cut what would become a double-digit deficit in half, midway through the second period, but the Academy of Art continued to rely on the long ball to stretch the lead back to 10 with under two minutes to play.
Cara Liggins and
Haylee Saurette helped erase the deficit with Liggins hitting a pair of three's at the end of the half and Saurette adding a pair of layups as PLNU cut the difference to one point by halftime.
Throughout the next 15 minutes of the second half, the score ping-ponged between a single-possession game and a double-digit deficit for Point Loma. But the Sea Lions could never overtake the Urban Knights for the lead.
Point Loma pulled closer despite shooting just 27% from the field in the second half but never found their rhythm offensively.
While the Urban Knights were effective from deep early in the game, they were just 1-6 in the third quarter, but still managed to outscore the Sea Lions 19-15 in the third period.
The five point-difference proved massive late as Point Loma was forced to foul and the Academy of Art sealed the ballgame by going 13-17 from the line in the 4
th quarter. In contrast, Point Loma was 10-16 from the stripe for the entire game.
Turnovers continued to be an issue for Point Loma in the second half as the Academy of Art finished the game with 23 total points off turnovers, forcing 20 total turnovers in the ball game.
That also contributed to Point Loma's need to foul over the final minutes as the Sea Lions were in reach.

Liggins finished as the game's leading scorer with 17 points. She also collected 8 rebounds, tied for the team-high.
